Summary
The
2-track yard is the "next step" up from the
single-track block. This yard can control a
minimum of 3 trains on 1 loop, by holding 2
trains in the yard while the 3rd is travelling
the mainline. Sometimes 4 or more trains can be
controlled on the loop, if the trains run
similar speeds and the loop is large.

3. Logic DiagramThe following figure, Logic Diagram for Automatic Switching Block, explains how this unit controls 3 trains on the same track. The operation is a combination of the Automatic Block and the automatic passing siding. |

4. Drawing SetThis drawing set shows how to construct, test, and operate the two-track Model 165 Automatic Switching Block. |

5. What The Drawing Set Produces#1651 Control UnitThe following figure shows the #1651 Control Unit.
More about Note 3 above: Has 2 on-off switches -- 1 for block function and 1 for switching functions. You can operate it as an automatic switching block, an automatic block, or an automatic passing siding, or you can fully depower it to operate like a piece of straight track (electrically transparent). The logic diagrams in Section 1 Overview explain these modes of operation.
The following figure shows the #1652 Track Unit.
NOTE: You can
purchase from Shiloh Signals a special 4-light
target signal (Shiloh part #GS4S) that will
indicate all 4 states of the control unit. For a
brochure, send a large SASE w/2 stamps to Shiloh

This kit is a subset of
the total parts list. The item numbers shown above
correspond to the item numbers on the Parts List for
#1651 Control Unit on Sheet 7. These items in this
list are chosen because they are either sometimes
difficult to order one at a time -- such as the rheostat
and large terminal block which does not satisfy Newark
Electronic's minimum order, or they may be somewhat
tedious to procure -- such as the colored wire and
colored shrink-wrap tubing, or you cannot buy just the
small piece you need -- such as the MD angle. If you obtain this
Special Parts Kit for Control Unit, you can (in theory)
obtain all the remaining parts with one trip to your LBG
Train Stop, one trip to Radio Shack, one trip to the art
store for the adhesive item 17 and the rubber cement item
18, and one trip to the builder's supply for the paint
item 19, plywood base item 27, and screws items 28 and
29. Note that the main
template (part 13), and the small yellow control panel
label (part 14), are supplied as part of Item 5 drawing
set.

Parts Kit is made available for those persons building
the Model 165 Automatic Switching Block Control Unit
themselves (using the U_BLD_M drawing set Item 5).

Comments About Expanding From 2 Tracks to 4
Tracks
If you are
presently building a 2-Track Automatic Switching Block,
and think that in the future, you may want to expand it
to 4-Track Zellner Yard, please
refer to the 4-Track Zellner Yard drawings (Section C)
before you start laying out the
track. The 4-track
drawings guide you through setting up the system in the
following steps:
